My Marketing Journey
Like most other entrepreneurs, I started doing the work for others at one point. My love for programming and anything computer since middle school paved the way for my career as a freelancer – building websites for businesses.
What started as a freelancing gig grew into a small agency. Then one day, I came face-to-face with my AHA moment.
While I was finding leads for my freelancing agency on Thumbtack, an online directory for consumers and service providers, I realized that Thumbtack charges the same for those teaching piano lessons and us building websites.
Come to think of it. If I can spend $50 to get us in front of our targeted market and profit $5,000, then it’s a huge win for me!
Without any hesitation, I launched my first marketing campaign. That breakthrough shifted us from getting projects through word of mouth to positioning ourselves out there as the go-to guys.
Since I already had a good amount of skills, a big vision, and the willingness to take personal and professional risks, I took the giant leap and got into entrepreneurship.
And that’s how I got into marketing and sales, which to this day, I’m still in love with.
Marketing with Matt’s Big Why
For more than ten years of doing marketing and sales, I’ve learned tons of practical ways that helped me move the needle. However, as I reflect on my growth over the years, I sometimes wish I had documented everything. Don’t we all want that?
And that’s how I realized now that I should finally put out content like this to help me document my progress and to help others, too, so they will avoid making the same mistakes. Hence, the birth of Marketing with Matt.
Marketing with Matt aims to deliver portable and memorable marketing and sales lessons. And when you’re in the trenches – building and growing your business – Marketing with Matt podcast will come on top of your mind.

Living a Life of Margins
But what does it really mean to live a life of margins? Why do we need margins? What is even margin, anyway?
In a general business context, a margin is a difference between the product or service’s selling price and the cost of production. In other words, a margin is the ratio of profit to revenue.
Dr. Richard Swenson, the author of the book Margin, explained it better.
According to him, a margin is a space or gap between our load and our limits. It is a gap, the place we go to heal, reflect, and recharge our batteries to focus on the things we love the most.
And as we progress – with all the technological advancements these days – we have SACRIFICED margin. You probably know what happens next when you don’t have one.
In Dr. Swenson’s words, a life without margin is the root of all ailments. Anxiety, depression, burnout – aren’t these familiar?
Here’s more: what most of us call success these days (the hustle, the 100-hour workweek) is actually a cage. It’s quite troubling how living today’s fast-paced life often causes our own demise.
And that’s where marketing comes in.
Marketing allows you to create that margin in your life. It connects people with other people who provide goods and services that solve meaningful problems. And when you have goods and services that create margins in people’s lives, how great could life be?
