The $10K email

I love preaching to people, especially if I have good news. I remember convincing around a hundred people back in college to try and sign up for a Gmail account, and that’s just how I roll.

Putting up that skill to use, I went into this live event with amazing people, and there I met someone who showed me cool software. The potential was there, so this guy created a free account for me and gave me an affiliate link.

By the end of the year, I made this email recap where I shared three recommendations that I only sent out to a small group of folks. And one of those recommendations has my affiliate link for that software.

Then a few weeks later, I hopped on a Zoom call with that guy who gave me an affiliate link and found out that I won their affiliate contest for December. Guess how much I won?

Well, it’s a whopping $10k and a free iMac and iPad. And all I did was write an email in under an hour, put my affiliate link in it and send it to my list. How cool was that? Do you see the potential in having an email list?

Types of Traffic

People need to understand this one simple thing – traffic already exists. It’s not about trying to create traffic, but it’s about getting in front of the traffic. But how do you get in front of your targeted audience?

Traffic comes in three types…

1. Paid traffic. You pay money to Facebook, Google, or any platform with traffic, and they’ll guarantee impressions – getting you in front of that traffic.

2. Borrowed traffic. It’s what you’d call all social media platforms, which allows you to get in front of your audience according to their terms. This type of traffic can change on a dime for any reason, and you don’t have any control over it.

3. Owned traffic. Unlike borrowed traffic, this kind of traffic lets you have full control. And it all comes to the list. Having a list allows you to interact with someone on their own terms in their most communicative place – their email or phone. And if you have a database of their email and phone number, you can probably reach out to them forever!

Knowing all these three above, you’ll then quickly realize that not all traffic is created equal. And you probably know by now which one is the most powerful.

How to Build an Email List

If you are building an email list, you’re assembling traffic that you own, and you will see greater and greater leverage as time goes on. Remember my quick email story above? That’s just one of the many great possibilities you can do with your list.

Now that you know that not all traffic is created equal and the types of traffic, the burning question is – how do you build a list?

Here are simple yet effective ways to build your list…

1. You need a place to gather or assemble the PENs (phone, email, and names), like a CRM or even a Google sheet where you can put all the information in one place. And the best place to start gathering those names is from your email inbox, and you’d be surprised by the number of PENs you have in your inbox.

2. Once you have all those names in one place, you’d want to start publishing – reach out to those on your list. How?

Here are some exciting email ideas that you can send to your list.

– a client example or client success story

– what’s currently working well

– picking up hobbies

– personal stuff

Lastly, you can grow your list by considering a lead magnet. A lead magnet is what you’ll give to your audience for FREE in exchange for their name, email, and phone number. And when you nail this process, it’d be easier to grow that list from 100 to 1,000.
