Asking the right questions is an art that every business owner and marketer must master.

In today’s fast-paced world, where everyone is vying for attention and trying to outsmart their competitors, it’s crucial to ask the right questions. Why, you ask?

Well, asking the right questions lead to the right answers, and the right answers lead to effective marketing strategies.

Asking Questions as a Discovery Process

Asking the right questions is a discovery process in the marketing world.

When you ask the right questions, you gain valuable insights into your target audience.

You can uncover their pain points, desires, and motivations. You understand what makes them tick, what they truly need, and how you can solve their problems best.

But what exactly are the right questions?

Well, they are the ones that dig deep, that go beyond the surface-level of clickbaity call-to-actions.

Instead of asking generic questions like, “Do you need customer support?” ask questions that reveal the core of your customer’s experiences.

Say, for example, when onboarding our clients on HL Pro Tools. Instead of asking them if they want to include a 24/7 customer support service on their package, you can prompt them with questions like, “What would you do if a customer signed up tomorrow?” or “What would you do if someone signed up and had a question at 10 pm?”.

You see, those latter questions sounded more compelling than the generic 24/7 customer support tagline.

They’re both tied into the same exact product; however, the statement is like saying this is what it does, while the questions carry a lot more power and significance. The questions compel us into action.

Assuming vs. Asking the Right Questions

Imagine that you’re developing this marketing strategy for your brand-new product. You’ve done your market research, crunched the numbers, and crafted what seems to be the perfect marketing plan.

But are you basing your marketing decisions based on XYZ assumptions or on well-crafted questions around your target market?

Assumptions can be sneaky little creatures. They often creep into our minds, disguised as facts, and sometimes lead us down a treacherous path.

While assumptions may seem like the easier path, they can blind us to crucial insights, leaving our marketing efforts shooting in the dark. And you don’t want that, do you?

That’s where asking the right questions steps in.

Remember this: The questions that we ask start to direct us to the things that we’ll measure. And then the things we measure turn into the items that we manage, and then the things that we manage improve.

And so if you start off with bad questions, you’ll end up measuring bad things, then you’ll end up managing insignificant things, and you will end up improving things that weren’t really aligned with what you ultimately wanted.

So, how can we become masters of asking the right questions and why it really matters in a successful marketing campaign?
