Mistake equals to failure. That is how most of us have been wired ever since.

In marketing, most of us would rather wait until everything’s perfect rather than get started and make mistakes along the way. But being “too perfect” can be a turnoff.

In today’s episode, I sit down with my buddy Tyler as we dive into this counterintuitive marketing strategy where mistakes aren’t just acceptable, but they’re deliberately manufactured to connect with customers and drive success to your marketing campaign.

We’ll explore how strategic manufactured mistakes can be a powerful catalyst for boosting your marketing strategy and taking your agency to a new level.

The Biggest Reminder I Get Daily

As a father of two, the biggest reminder I get on a daily basis is how flawed we are as humans.

You watch your kids struggle and make mistakes. They fall (and get bruised) multiple times before they learn to walk.

In other words, we are all repeatedly bad before we get good. And that becomes subtle programming in us on what it means to be human.

So how does this relate to marketing?

In marketing, campaigns that come across as overly “business-like” or “too polished” often get overlooked.

Why does this happen? Because what people truly crave is a sense of connection.

And the best telltale sign to know that there’s a genuine human behind a business is by making mistakes–that subtle programming in us that we acquired since we were kids.

Why Manufactured Mistakes Work

In a world flooded with polished perfection, consumers crave authenticity more than ever. This is where manufactured mistakes come in.

Manufactured mistakes humanize brands, making them relatable and approachable.

When a marketing campaign embraces imperfections rather than being too polished, it sends a powerful message: “Hey, we’re just like you–real people with occasional slip-ups.”

And this resonates with consumers on a deeper level.

However, many business owners have their egos wrapped up in their businesses. Even though they know that manufactured mistakes perform better, they won’t do it because they don’t want to look bad.

But the irony is that making mistakes is what makes us humans. And that actually endears us to people.

I’ve done countless direct-response marketing campaigns, and the best ones so far with higher engagements are those with misspelled words, sent too soon, text to my spouse–or basically those manufactured mistakes that show we are humans and not just marketers.

So, are you ready to embrace your imperfections and skyrocket your business?
